What is Permaculture?

Permaculture, a condensation of the words ‘permanent agriculture,’ is a set of whole systems design strategies. Permaculture builds from the patterns and features already intrinsic to an ecology, uses as few inputs as possible, turns outputs into inputs — waste into nutrient — whenever possible.

Permaculture functions on three core tenets:

  1. Earth Care
  2. People Care
  3. Fair Share

The design of permaculture usually functions with five different zones. Aspects of the garden or farm that are located around the home, or zone 0, require more attention and care. These include plants like cooking herbs and eggs. The farther out the zones get, the less daily attention is required.
