Karen Washington
Karen Washington is a political activist and community leader who has spent her life fighting for food justice. Recognizing that lower income, urban communities tend to have less access to fresh, local products, Washington has mobilized many urban neighborhoods to start community gardens and hold farmers markets in New York City. Washington worked to turn empty lots into community gardens in the Bronx. She also founded the organization, Black Urban Growers, whose volunteers maintain a network of support and coeducation, connecting urban and rural growers. (Source)
