August 4- Return of the Moss

Moss_Materials

My apartment mates have started to make fun of me for all the moss smoothies I’ve been making this summer trying to find the best recipe for graffiting.

This time I tried using yogurt instead of buttermilk because one of my issues was the consistency of the mixture being too watery- making wall applications harder. I tried two different ratios the first (1) being a 1:1 ratio of yogurt and water, the second (2) being a 2:1 ratio of yogurt to water. I finally ended up with a paint-like consistency that wouldn’t drip down the wall when I painted it on! Both are pretty paint-like but if you would rather have a thicker consistency stick with the second ratio.

As opposed to all the other places I have attempted to try moss graffiti I went on a bike ride and roved around Hamilton until I found a few spots where moss was already growing. This way I knew the location was the right condition for growing moss. I ended up stenciling back behind Schupf Studio and behind Little Hall on Colgate’s campus. However, I did stencil these on the ground since that is where the moss was growing. All in all I wanted to give this recipe the best chance of success.

I’m alternating days of misting the area and reapplying the mixture. I’ll keep this up for about two weeks and see where that gets me.
